KALAMAZOO ? The Western Michigan University women's basketball team edged Hillsdale College, 87-79, in its second and final exhibition game at University Arena Friday night.
The Broncos were led by Carrie Moore, who had a game-high 28 points, Lindsey Brown's 16 points, and sophomore point guard Tiera DeLaHoussaye, who contributed a double-double with 11 points and 10 assists.
WMU controlled the tempo early on and jumped out to a commanding 16-5 lead. The Brown & Gold led by as many as 16 points (24-8) with eight minutes left in the first half. Hillsdale battled back behind the play of Lauren Fewins and Nikki Wustman to outscore the Broncos 25-12 over the span of five and a half minutes to close the gap 36-33 with 2:36 remaining. WMU fought off the Chargers' comeback to escape to the locker room leading 39-35.
Hillsdale road their late first half momentum to open the second half with 7-0 run and take their first and largest lead of the game 42-39. The Broncos answered with back-to-back three pointers by Moore and Amanda Parker, which sparked a 14-4 run. WMU pushed its second half lead to eleven (80-69), but the relentless Chargers surged again with a 10-1 run of their own, narrowing the score to 81-79 with 1:51 remaining. Moore hit a lay-up and sank four free throws to close out the game.
"Defensively we stepped out with purpose tonight," said head coach Ron Stewart. "We responded well playing against a good Division II team that is well coached."
The Broncos open regular season play next Saturday (Nov. 11) on the road at Illinois-Chicago at 4 p.m.
