ST. THOMAS, USVI- Western Michigan (1-4) got double-figure scoring efforts from Tiera DeLaHoussaye, Carrie Moore and Nicole Watkins but Marquette (3-1) used a strong second-half performance from its bench to prevail over the Broncos at the Paradise Jam in the U.S. Virgin Islands, 74-61.
Trailing by 10 points midway through the second half, WMU rallied and tied the game with 8:47 remaining on a pair of Moore free throws. Marquette countered down the stretch and pulled away from the Broncos with a 12-0 run late in the game. Much of that surge was provided by the Golden Eagle reserves, as Marquette scored 23 of its 25 bench points in the second half.
Moore finished the afternoon with 19 points and reached another milestone in her career, passing Pat Charity for fourth place on WMU's all-time scoring list. DeLaHoussaye tallied 14 points and Watkins added 10. Sara Vest led the Broncos with seven rebounds and chipped in eight points.
Western Michigan shot just 35.7 percent from the field in the first half before improving to 44.8 percent in the second period.
The Golden Eagles held the advantage on the boards, 41-38, and out-scored WMU in the paint, 48-32.
Marquette's Christina Quaye was the game's leading scorer with 23 points.
Western Michigan will play its second of three games at the Paradise Jam tomorrow, facing Xavier at 3:30 p.m. The Broncos conclude action in the Virgin Islands with Auburn on Saturday at 1 p.m.
