Women's Basketball WMU

Western Michigan Edged by Wisconsin, 80-77

Box Score

MADISON, Wis. -- Those basketball experts who picked Western Michigan to finish second in the MAC West Division may want to rethink their predictions.

Carrie Moore scored 29 points and Tiera DeLaHoussaye poured in a career-high 23 points as Western Michigan fell to Big Ten opponent Wisconsin, 80-77, in a non-conference affair at the Kohl Center.

Trailing the entire game, WMU had a chance to force overtime in the closing seconds.  Coming off the bench, Nicole Watkins launched a three-point attempt from the left arc that just missed off the rim.  DeLaHoussaye grabbed the rebound, but couldn't get another shot off before the buzzer.

"I'm really proud of how our team performed in a close situation like tonight's game," said Stewart.  "They battled and really hung in there all night long."

Much like its season opener, WMU started slow, falling behind by eight points and going six minutes into the game before converting on its first field goal.  The Broncos closed the gap to five at halftime, then shot 60.9 percent from the floor in the second half against an athletic Badger squad to keep the game close at hand.

Other notable performances were turned in by Lindsey Brown, who collected a team-best nine rebounds and freshman Sara Vest, who came off the bench to record six points and five rebounds in 25 minutes of action.

The Brown & Gold went on a 10-4 run in the closing minutes to setup the last-second drama.

The Broncos certainly earned the respect of their opponent.  "Carrie Moore was one of the best I've seen," said Wisconsin coach Lisa Stone.  "She's a great player, very poised and she played with passion and intensity, doesn't get in foul trouble, she shoots a three, she can go to the rim.  She's big time."

WMU (0-2) will next prepare for its home opener this Friday (Nov. 17) against Detroit Mercy at University Arena.  Tipoff is 7 p.m.
