KALAMAZOO, Mich. -- Western Michigan snapped a six-game losing streak with a 2-2 double overtime tie against Detroit in non-conference action Sunday from the WMU Soccer Complex.
Terry Dowding forced overtime with his team-leading sixth goal of the season, scored with11 minutes left in regulation. Tom Oatley assisted on the play and finished with three points on the day. He scored in the first half after Nick Giannakis stole a ball from a UD defender and slid a pass across the box to Oatley at the far post.
"Nick has really stepped forward for us in a supporting role," said WMU coach Chris Karwoski. "He is making good things happen when he's on the field."
The physical contest produced 46 fouls, 10 yellow cards and three penalty kicks.
WMU's Dustin Snyder attempted two penalty kicks, hitting the post in the 18th minute and being turned away by goalkeeper Sasha Boskovic in the 108th minute. The Broncos also hit two cross bars in the closing minute of the second overtime period.
"We had two really good-looking goals today," added Karwoski. "We added thrust to our attack with three forwards, but sadly were only able to score twice."
Western Michigan (2-10-1) hits the road for games at Buffalo (Oct. 13) and Canisius (Oct. 15) next week.
