KALAMAZOO, Mich. -- In a contest that turned into a goaltenders battle, Ferris State edged Western Michigan, 2-1, in Central Collegiate Hockey Associaton action from Lawson Arena.
Goaltender Mitch O'Keefe made 25 saves for the Bulldogs while WMU's Daniel Bellissimo turned away 24 shots.
Ferris State (3-2-0/1-0-0 CCHA) struck in the opening period when Casey Haines scored on an odd-man rush at 4:22. Freshman Cody Chupp assisted on the play and added a goal at the 5:48 mark of the second period, catching Bellissimo out of the crease.
WMU (1-2-0/1-2-0) closed the gap on Chris Frank's goal with 6:27 left in the middle period, which followed a goal-mouth scramble.
The teams square off tomorrow night in Big Rapids (7:05 p.m.)
