Lake Superior (12-6-4/8-6-2 CCHA) scored twice in the opening period on tallies from Colin Nicholson and Trent Campbell.
A penalty-riddled second period saw the teams combined for 18 penalties for 58 minutes as a small melee broke out at the 2:28 mark. LSSU added an insurance goal on Nathan Ward's bank shot off the pads of Daniel Bellissimo at the 3:59 mark.
“We wanted to come out of this weekend with some points and weren't able to do that, which is disappointing,” said WMU coach Jim Culhane. “Give Lake Superior credit, they're a solid team behind goaltender Jeff Jakaitis.”
