KALAMAZOO -- The Western Michigan men's tennis team took seven of nine matches from Butler Sunday afternoon at the West Hills Athletic Club on its way to a 6-1 victory. The Broncos' (3-1) Brady Crosby, Tim Bradshaw and Jeff French all picked up two wins against the Bulldogs (0-2).
Crosby and his partner Bryan Norville started the day off with an 8-5 win at one singles and the Broncos clinched the doubles point moments later when Bradshaw and French won 8-5. Butler salvaged a win in doubles as Brandon Gill and Parker Ross defeated Alex Birchmeier and Jose Orozco 8-5.
The Brown & Gold clinched the victory by taking the first four singles matches. Bradshaw won a first set tiebreak against Andy Bartish, 7-4, before finishing him off 6-2 in the second. French rolled past Scott Newmark 6-0, 6-3 at six singles to earn Player of the Match honors from head coach Dave Morin. Birchmeier clinched the match with a win over Evan West 6-4, 6-4. Crosby won at one singles 6-3, 6-4 over James Low and Orozco wrapped up the scoring for the Broncos with a lengthy win over Brandon Gill 7-6 (5), 7-6 (5).
"Before we started I talked to the guys about playing a complete match in doubles and singles. I think we did a better job of that today," Morin said. "Today was our best effort as far as starting off strong in doubles and singles. I think we are getting closer to where I want us to be. I like the direction we are heading."
The Broncos also played three exhibition matches against Butler. RK Bacalla and John Pelton beat Tony Aker and Newmark in doubles 8-6 while Bryan Norville beat Aker 8-3 and Alejandro Staub won 8-5 against Eric Breitenbach in singles.
Western Michigan returns to West Hills Athletic Club next Saturday with a pair of matches. The Broncos play Big Ten foe Iowa at 11 a.m. and Valparaiso at 4 p.m.
