GREEN BAY, Wis. ? Western Michigan fell victim to an “own goal” which proved to be the difference in a 3-2 loss to Wisconsin-Green Bay at Santaga Stadium.
Trailing 2-1 just a minute into the second half, UWGB banked a shot off the crossbar that deflected off the leg of a Bronco player past GK Brent Miller.
Tosaint Ricketts scored twice in the opening 30 minutes to give the Phoenix a 2-0 lead. Forward Terry Dowding put WMU on board in the 35th minute, tucking a shot inside the far post.
WMU struck again in the 64th minute as Nashir Caraballi buried a shot from 30 yards out for his second tally of the season.
The Brown & Gold had a few good chances to pull even late in the game, but couldn't put a shot past GK Josh Loyd, who finished with four saves.
“We had too many mental lapses and it cost us today,” said WMU coach Chris Karwoski. “We didn't knock the ball around like we wanted to and a few good opportunities missed our feet at the end of the game.”
Western Michigan (2-4-1) plays host to Loyola on Friday (Sept. 30).
