CHARLESTON, S.C. -- The Western Michigan men's soccer team opened its 2005 campaign with a 5-1 loss to host College of Charleston at the Aaron Olitsky Memorial/Nike Classic.
The Cougars built a 2-0 lead after one half of action before the Broncos struck on Tom Oatley's tally in the 48th minute off a corner kick. CoC proceeded to score three more times in the second half to pull away. Jeremy Gold finished with three goals while Matthew Curran had a pair of tallies and Matt Morris two assists. CoC finished with an 11-4 edge in overall shots.
"They finished on more of their chances than we did and that was the difference," said WMU coach Chris Karwoski. "We also had too many mental lapses in the game which cost us."
WMU encounters Georgia State (a 4-3 overtime loser to Vanderbilt) Saturday at 5:30 p.m. on the Classic's final day.
