Tony Scheffler Named Academic All-MAC

KALAMAZOO, Mich. ? Tony Scheffler was named Academic All-Mid-American Conference for the second time in his career.  Scheffler was also an ESPN the Magazine Academic All-District IV selection for the second-straight year in 2005.

The Chelsea, Mich., native is no stranger to accolades for his work in the classroom.  Of the 28 MAC football student-athletes on the conference's All-Academic Team, Scheffler is one of only 13 honorees to have made the team on more than one occasion.

Scheffler ranks third in the nation among tight ends in receptions (5.18) and fifth in the country in yards per game (60.9).  He finished 2005 second all-time among Bronco tight ends in receptions (117) and yards (1,345).  He began the season on the John Mackey Award List, an honor given to the nation's best tight end.  Scheffler was named a Mackey National Tight End of the Week twice and finished fourth in the final voting.

Western Michigan finished the season 7-4 overall and 5-3 in conference play.  The Broncos finished third in the MAC West Division, after being picked to finish fifth, and put together the biggest turnaround in the history of the Mid-American Conference, finishing with just one overall victory a year ago.
