HAMILTON, N.Y. -- Captain Jon Smyth's goal 20 seconds into overtime lifted 15th-ranked Colgate to a 4-3 come-from-behind victory over Western Michigan in a non-conference game held in Starr Rink. The loss was WMU's first against a ranked opponent in six games this season.
Colgate forced overtime on Marc Fulton's goal with 3:22 left in regulation, tying the contest after freshman Mike Weaver's first collegiate goal had given the Broncos a 3-2 lead just 1:35 into the period.
Western Michigan (3-7-2) struck first as Paul Szczechura scored for the second straight game, redirecting a pass from Brent Walton on the power play with 21 seconds left in the first period. Walton added a short-handed goal in the second period to give WMU a 2-1 lead. In the process, Walton extended his goal-scoring streak to four games and his points streak to five games.
Colgate (8-2-3) received goals from defenseman Mike Campaner and Jesse Winchester in the second period.
“I'm pleased with our effort tonight, I thought we skated hard and played with a lot of desire but obviously didn't get the result we wanted,” said WMU coach Jim Culhane.
Western Michigan encounters Notre Dame in a home-and-home series next week (Dec. 2-3), starting Friday in Kalamazoo.
NOTES: Colgate entered the series ranked 15th by the USCHO.com/CSTV and USA Today/USA Hockey Magazine polls.
