KALAMAZOO, Mich. (Nov. 19) -- Western Michigan remains unbeaten against ranked opponents after posting a 5-3 victory over No. 13 Michigan State at Lawson Arena. With the win, WMU took three of four points against MSU this weekend while improving to 3-0-1 against Top 15 teams this season.
MSU (5-5-3/2-4-3 CCHA) opened scoring with a power play tally at 9:46 of the first period before WMU responded with four straight goals. Mike Lesperance scored twice in the opening period while Mike Erickson added a power play tally. WMU finished 3-for-7 on the man advantage while MSU went 2-for-9.
The Broncos (3-6-1/3-4-1 CCHA) received goals from Brent Walton and Chris Frank in the second period. In net, Daniel Bellissimo gave up just one even strength goal, finishing with 36 saves.
"I thought we skated very hard tonight and took advantage of our opportunities," said WMU coach Jim Culhane. "We overcame some adversity in the first period and put together a nice effort for the second straight night."
WMU travels to Colgate next week (Nov. 25-26) for a pair of non-conference games.
