KALAMAZOO, Mich. -- Western Michigan's season came to a dramatic end as No. 6 seed Central Michigan staged a 1-0 upset in a Mid-American Conference Tournament Quarterfinal match from the WMU Soccer Complex. The loss was WMU's first at home this season.
CMU (7-9-3) scored on its first shot of the game when Alison Heydorn and Jacquie Lacek strung passes together and found Katy Boggan alone on the far post. Boggan slid the ball past GK Kate Perz at the 1:44 mark on a shot that was nearly blocked on the goal line by a sprawling Bronco defender.
The third-seeded Broncos (10-8-1) applied steady pressure in the second half, but couldn't capitalize on its opportunities. The team's best chance came with 30 minutes left in regulation when a shot bounced off goalkeeper Anne Decker. Katie Ruzinsky was positioned for the rebound but chipped the ball over the crossbar.
The statistics sheet reflected the closeness of the game. CMU finished with a slight edge in shots (19-18) as both teams generated nine corners. In the end, CMU's early tally made the difference.
"We couldn't get it done today," said coach Mike Haines. "We gave it our best effort, especially in the last 10 minutes trying to get that tying goal. Central marked up better on defense this time around and gave our forwards less space."
"It's a tough loss any time your season ends but especially so for this group of seniors who have accomplished so much. They raised the level of expectations for this program and their contributions were phenomenal."
