CLEVELAND -- Western Michigan sophomore kick returner Darius Phillips was named Mid-American Conference West Division Special Teams Player of the Week after his performance against No. 5 Michigan State.
Phillips (Detroit, Mich./Robichaud) finished the night with a career-high 185 yards on four kick returns in the 37-24 loss to the Spartans. He opened up the game with a 70-yard kick return to put the Broncos in field goal position. Phillips followed that with a career-long 100-yard kick return for a touchdown after a MSU touchdown to tie the game at 7-7. His 185 yards were the third-most in a single game in WMU history.
Phillips also had three tackles and three pass breakups in his first start as a cornerback.
