KALAMAZOO, Mich. - Boston McCornell became the third Bronco to earn a Mid-American
Conference weekly award when he was named MAC West Defensive Player of
the Week for his 10-tackle effort against Temple. McCornell was also
named MAC Report Online Defensive Player of the Week on Sunday evening.
McCornell made a season-high 10 stops (six solo) to lead Western Michigan's staunch defense in a 7-3 win over Temple at Lincoln Financial Field. He also made key plays in the turnover department, forcing one fumble and registering his first-career fumble recovery late in the game.
With the Owls trailing by four points and driving, Temple quarterback Chester Stewart fumbled the ball and McCornell came up with it to preserve the victory. WMU's defense was strong all afternoon, forcing Temple's offense into six three-and-outs despite the Owls starting drives in Western Michigan territory four times.
McCornell also became the second Bronco in as many weeks to earn a helmet sticker on ESPN.com from Non-BCS conference reporter Graham Watson. Tim Hiller was the first to do so after his five-touchdown performance against Tennessee Tech.
The Macon, Ga., native joins Hiller and senior free safety Louis Delmas as the other Broncos to earn MAC West Player of the Week honors, giving WMU three honorees during the first five weeks of the season.
