Western Michigan Wins Series Over NIU With Sunday Shutout

DEKALB, Ill.- Western Michigan baseball picked up a 4-0 win at Northern Illinois Sunday to take this weekend's series against the Huskies two games to one. WMU improves its Mid-American Conference record to 13-11 and its overall mark to 21-25.

Bronco right-handed senior Chad Mayle and freshman right-handed reliever Peyton Gray yielded just five hits, all singles, in the combined shutout. Mayle went six innings in the start and struck out four, while Gray fanned two.

WMU shortstop Nick Vogelmeier scored following a leadoff walk in the third to give WMU a 1-0 lead. Freshman center fielder Tanner Allison cranked a leadoff double in the fourth and went on to score on a one-out RBI single by freshman pinch hitter Evan Nelson.

Junior second baseman Kurt Hoekstra cracked a one-out solo home run to right field in the top of the fifth and WMU added an unearned run in the seventh for the 4-0 victory.

WMU concludes the regular season with four games at home this upcoming week, hosting Notre Dame on Tuesday before taking on conference rival Central Michigan in a three game series Thursday through Saturday.
