LEXINGTON, Ky. -- The Western Michigan University men's soccer team begins its 2026 campaign tomorrow night in the bluegrass state.
WELCOME TO 2026!
The Western Michigan University men's soccer team begins its 2026 season on the road for the first time in two years. The Broncos will complete a home-and-home Opening Day series with the Kentucky Wildcats on Thursday evening. WMU is looking for its first win at Bell Soccer Complex as UK leads the overall series at 2-14-1.
The Wildcats made their 11th trip to Kalamazoo last year to begin the 2025 season. Kentucky and the Brown and Gold were conference opponents in the Mid-American Conference for 11 seasons before UK moved to Conference USA in 2005. This will be Western Michigan's first visit to Lexington in 5 years after the two programs played a non-conference match in 2021.
2025 REWIND
The Broncos made postseason noise last season after finishing the regular season at 5-9-3 with a Missouri Valley Conference record of 2-2-3. Despite entering the MVC Tournament as the no. 6 seed, WMU ran the gauntlet of the top Valley teams to earn its second Tournament Championship in only 3 seasons. The Brown and Gold won the MVC title at top seeded Evansville with the lone goal of the match, a bicycle kick score in the 72nd minute from defender Mathieu Beauvain.
With the tournament championship, Western Michigan made its fourth-straight appearance in the NCAA Tournament, along with its fourth-straight first round victory. The Broncos defeated Clemson 1-0 on another goal from Beauvain in the 21st minute. WMU ended its 2025 season at eventual College Cup runner ups, No. 16 Furman.
PICKED TO WIN
After a dominate postseason run in 2025 and returning half of their points leaders, the Brown and Gold were selected to win the Missouri Valley Conference in a preseason poll of league coaches. Western Michigan earned five first-place votes and 44 total points in the poll, edging out second place Drake at 40 points. This is the first time the Broncos have been selected as the preseason favorite for either the MVC or MAC dating back to 2010.
WMU also had another Valley first in the preseason selections with three players on the Preseason All-MVC team. Defenders
Braxton Arpachinda and
Christian Shannon both earned preseason accolades along with forward
Sahel Yessen. This is Arpachinda and Yessen's first preseason selections, while Shannon repeats as a preseason All-MVC defender for the Brown and Gold. Arpachinda also earned preseason honors from United Soccer Coaches as one of their 2026 Midfielders to Watch.

Of the 13 newcomers the Brown and Gold add one goalkeeper, five defenders, four midfielders, and three forwards. Western Michigan's 2026 class come from across the globe with players from Canada, Ireland, Germany, and South Korea along with covering four states (Kansas, Maryland, Michigan, and Pennsylvania). Along with their newcomers, the Broncos return 13 players from their 2025 MVC Tournament winning roster.
SCOUTING THE WILDCATS
Kentucky comes into Thursday night's opening matchup having received votes in the preseason coaches poll from United Soccer Coaches after making it to the first round of the NCAA Tournament last season. The Wildcats won the Sun Belt Conference regular season title in 2025 but were eliminated in the semifinals of the SBC Tournament by eventual champions Central Florida. Heading into the 2026 season, Kentucky was selected to finish fourth in the Sun Belt in a preseason poll of league coaches with 76 total votes, including two first-place votes, behind first-place West Virginia, Marshall and UCF.
Despite placing fourth in the poll, the Wildcats had three players selected for the preseaon All-SBC Team, including midfielder Agustin Lopez, and defenders Sinan Solmaz and Max Miller. Lopez and Miller have earned conference recognition in the past while this is Solmaz first after joining Kentucky from CSU Bakersfield. Lopez also earned honors from the United Soccer Coaches as a member of their 2026 Midfielders to Watch list. The Wildcats return 10 players from its 2025 roster but have lost their two top scorers to graduation and the transfer portal.
