Five Broncos earn postseason All-MVC honors

ST. LOUIS -- Five members of the Western Michigan University men's soccer team have been recognized for their league-leading play in the regular season by the Missouri Valley Conference.

The Broncos placed three players on the All-MVC First Team, one on the All-MVC Second Team and one on the MVC All-Freshman Team for the 2026 season. Redshirt junior defender Christian Shannon and junior forwards Vitor Geromel and Sahel Yessen represent WMU on the First Team. Redshirt senior goalkeeper Alex Lindewirth was the lone member of the Brown and Gold on the All-MVC Second Team. And freshman midfielder Neo Heyral was named to the MVC All-Freshman Team to round out Western Michigan's conference postseason honors. Postseason awards were voted on by the seven Valley head coaches before being announced by the conference office this afternoon.

Christian Shannon earned his third straight postseason recognition on Saturday after appearing and starting in 15 matches during the 2026 season. Shannon led a Bronco back line this season that limited MVC opponents to only 0.66 and 5.7 shots on goal per game. During conference play, Shannon appeared and started in all six matches and played a full 90 minutes of action. Along with his defensive play, Shannon contributed a goal for WMU's offense at DePaul on October 20 and has seven shots on goal.

Both the Brown and Gold and the Valley's leading scorer, Vitor Geromel, earned his first All-MVC honor this weekend. Geromel was an offensive leader in his first season with Western Michigan, scoring a team-high 10 goals while adding two assists for 22 points during the regular season. Geromel's 10 goals were the most goals by a Bronco in three years since Charlie Sharp's program record season in 2023. Across the MVC, Geromel led the conference in three areas: goals (10), shots on goal (29), and points (22). He was also nationally ranked in all three categories at 18th in goals, 24th in shots on goal, and 32nd in points.

After making the Preseason All-MVC Team, Sahel Yessen made the postseason All-MVC First Team in 2026. Yessen was WMU's second most productive offensive player behind Geromel with four goals and four assists to compile a total of 12 points in 18 matches. Yessen was one of only three players to appear and start in every match for the Brown and Gold during the regular season, spending a total of 1,320 minutes on the pitch for Western Michigan.

Alex Lindewirth had a career season in net in 2026 to earn All-MVC Second Team honors. Lindewirth led the conference in saves the entire season and was the leader in saves per game across the Valley until October 20. Most recently, Lindewirth had a career performance in net at Belmont, making eight saves on nine shots on goal to earn the Broncos a key road point. In 16 matches this year, Lindewirth had three shutouts and one combined shutout, which included shutouts of Bowling Green and Drake during MVC play.

Freshman midfielder Neo Heyral was the only WMU player in his first year of collegiate soccer to earn a postseason honor. Heyral was one of only two Brown and Gold freshmen to appear in all 18 matches this season, spending 1,251 minutes on the pitch. Across 18 games, Heyral assisted on two goals to be one of eight players with multiple helpers in 2026. He also took 13 shots during the season while having five shots on goal.

Three programs dominated the 2026 MVC specialty awards as Belmont and Evansville earned three and Bowling Green earned two. The Purple Aces had three of the player specialty awards as senior midfielder Pablo Calvete was named the Player of the Year, sophomore Devin Shepherd was named the Forward of the Year, and sophomore Eti Ravelli was named the Defender of the Year. Belmont had both the Midfielder of the Year in sophomore Paul Claes Nielsen and the Freshman of the Year in defender Leon De Ciccio. Bowling Green has the Goalkeeper of the Year in senior Jason Ball, who took over in net midway through the season for the Falcons. Bowling Green also earned the Coaching Staff of the Year award while Belmont won the Fair Play Award for the fewest yellow cards during MVC matches for the second straight year.

Western Michigan begins its quest to the MVC Tournament Championship match this evening as the tournament's third seed. The Broncos are hosting No. 6 Drake on Saturday, November 7, at the WMU Soccer Complex for the quarterfinals round. Kick-off against the Bulldogs is set for 6 p.m.
