KALAMAZOO, Mich. -- A goal in the final five minutes of Saturday's Missouri Valley Conference Tournament Quarterfinals match helped the Western Michigan University men's soccer team to a 1-0 victory to advance to the semifinal round.
Sophomore defender
Dan McHale scored his first career goal for the Broncos in the 86th minute against the sixth seed Drake Bulldogs in WMU's first postseason game. The Brown and Gold defense smothered Drake's attack allowing only two shots on goal while also blocking half of the Bulldogs shots. Senior forward
Joseph Min had a season best match on Saturday night, playing all 90 minutes for the first time in 2026 while also recording a team-high four shots.
While Drake recorded the first shot of the match, it was Western Michigan's offense that controlled early. The Broncos had three attempts in the first 16 minutes with two chances that almost gave WMU an early lead. One was a shot that was just wide from midfielder
Liam Biggers and the other a shot inside the 18 from forward
Vitor Geromel after a Bulldog turnover which was saved by their goalkeeper.
But the Brown and Gold offense went quiet after the first third of the half as Drake dominated possession time. The Bulldogs racked up eight shots to Western Michigan's two to close out the scoreless half.
The Bronco offense found a new gear to begin the second half, peppering Drake's goalkeeper with four shots in only three minutes. The Bulldogs goalie made three saves along with a team save as WMU ramped up its attack. Redshirt senior goalkeeper
Alex Lindewirth made one of his two saves on the night shortly after the Brown and Gold's early offensive rush. The match began to get physical midway through the second half as both sides fought for offensive possession, including trading yellow cards.
Western Michigan soon got back in its offensive third while also frustrating Drake into another yellow card. Heading into the final 15 minutes of regulation time the Broncos and the Bulldogs traded shots as each goalkeeper made another save. WMU was awarded a free kick to the right of the penalty box after a hard Drake foul with 4:24 left on the game clock. The Brown and Gold had their best set piece of the night as midfielder
Kyle Pierson's strike found McHale at the 12 where he was able to head it into the net.
The Bulldogs weren't able to put together any sort of last minute offensive rush on Western Michigan's defense. The Broncos closed out the game by drawing two more Drake fouls and a yellow card on the Bulldogs coaching staff for the shutout victory. The shutout is Lindewirth's fifth of the season while Pierson's assist gave him team lead of five on the year.
With Saturday night's win, WMU heads to a familiar pitch in the postseason in Arad McCutchan Stadium. The Brown and Gold will take on the second seed and regular season co-champions Evansville on Wednesday. Last year Western Michigan came into the Purple Aces home stadium and won the 2025 MVC Tournament Championship with a 1-0 shutout. The Broncos will look to do the same in this year's semifinal matchup on Wednesday, November 11 at 7 p.m. EST.Â
