Broncos Begin NCHC Play at #5/5 in National Polls

KALAMAZOO, Mich. – After sweeping LIU at home this past weekend, Western Michigan hockey (6-1-0, 0-0-0 NCHC) rose to #5 in the USCHO poll and remained #5 in the USA Hockey poll, released Monday. The rankings continue WMU's run of being ranked in the nation's top 10 since November of 2024.

The Broncos received one first-place vote in the USCHO poll.

In the USCHO poll, Wisconsin jumped to the top spot and was joined in the top five by Michigan, Michigan State, Denver and WMU. Five NCHC teams were ranked this week, with the Broncos joined by Denver (#4), Minnesota Duluth (T-#6), North Dakota (#10) and Colorado College (#11). Miami, Arizona State and St. Cloud State all received votes. The NCHC had five total programs in the USA Hockey poll, including Denver (#4), Minnesota Duluth (#7), North Dakota (#10) and Colorado College (#11). St. Cloud State received votes in the USCHO poll this week, while Miami and Arizona State received votes in both polls.

The Broncos outscored the Sharks 17-6 in the sweep last week, highlighted by a pair of hat tricks on Thursday from senior forward William Whitelaw and junior defenseman Joona Väisänen, the first teammates to do so in a single game in NCHC history. Western Michigan opens NCHC play this weekend with a top-10 matchup at North Dakota (4-3-0, 0-0-0 NCHC), ranked #10 in both polls, Friday, Nov. 6 at 8 p.m. ET and Saturday, Nov. 7 at 7 p.m. ET at Ralph Engelstad Arena in Grand Forks, N.D.
