SOUTH BEND, Ind. – Western Michigan secured a 4-0 victory over Notre Dame on Friday night at Compton Family Ice Arena. The win moved WMU to 13-6-0 overall.
Iiro Hakkarainen,
Owen Michaels,
Colby Woogk and
Zach Nehring had goals for the Brown and Gold.
Hampton Slukynsky picked up his second shutout of the season, making 18 saves in net.
FIRST PERIOD
The Broncos got the first power play of the game, with Notre Dame getting sent off for tripping about three minutes into the game. Despite a trio of good looks, the Irish would work back to full strength.
However, not long after that,
Grady Gallatin sent a nice pass to Hakkarainen who found the back of the net. The goal was his third of the season and pushed WMU in front 1-0 just over five minutes into the opening period.
Later in the period,
Theo Wallberg nearly added to the score, but his shot was saved by ND goaltender Jack Williams. Moments later, a
Grant Slukynsky pass found the stick of Nehring. Williams was just able to get a piece of the shot, sending the game to the second period with a 1-0 WMU advantage.
SECOND PERIOD
WMU kept up the pressure, getting a strong look from
Liam Valente in the early stages of the second frame. A few minutes after that chance, Michaels would break through and hit twine for a 2-0 Bronco lead.
After some back-and-forth action,
Theo Wallberg and Gallatin ripped shots on net that nearly added to the lead. Down the stretch of the period,
William Whitelaw would hit the crossbar and
Garrett Szydlowski rifled a chance off the post.
Nothing would find the back of the net, though, and the Brown and Gold carried a two-goal advantage into the final 20 minutes of play.
THIRD PERIOD
The Broncos picked up the pressure to start the final frame, getting early looks from
Zack Sharp and
Ty Henricks. Eventually, Woogk would rip a shot from the point that would find the back of the net. The goal was the first of his career and made the score 3-0.
WMU wasn't done there, as Nehring joined the fun. Valente forced a turnover in the offensive end and found a wide open Nehring in front of the net to make it 4-0 in favor of the visitors.
Down the stretch, Western Michigan would pick up a penalty. However, the penalty killers did well to limit the chances. Notre Dame didn't get a single shot on net, and the Broncos closed out a 4-0 win.
