Broncos Finish Off Sweep of Notre Dame

KALAMAZOO, Mich. – Western Michigan continued its winning ways, picking up a 4-0 victory over Notre Dame on Saturday night at Lawson Arena. The win pushed WMU to 14-6 overall.

Owen Michaels, Samuel Sjolund, Grant Slukynsky and Zaccharya Wisdom lit the lamp for the Brown and Gold, while Hampton Slukynsky made 33 saves in net to earn the win.

FIRST PERIOD
The Broncos came out fast, getting early chances on net from Zach Nehring and Iiro Hakkarainen. From there, Zach Bade and Zach Bookman would try their luck on net, having both of their shots turned away by the UND goaltender.

Both teams eventually picked up a penalty, opening up the ice for 4-on-4 hockey. Theo Wallberg rifled a shot on net that nearly hit the back of the net. However, both teams would go on to get their skater back.

Down the stretch, WMU was sent off for hitting from behind. UND carried 36 seconds of power-play time into the second period.

SECOND PERIOD
WMU didn't allow a shot for the remainder of the man advantage, easily getting back to even strength. Not too long after that, Michaels found some open space off of a feed from William Whitelaw. The junior captain ripped a shot just under the bar for a 1-0 lead not even two minutes into the middle frame.

Not even a minute later, the Irish were sent off for too many men on the ice. The Brown and Gold got three shots on goal, but Notre Dame would get itself back to even strength.

In the back half of the period, Western Michigan would strike again, as Sjolund fired a shot into the back of the net from the left circle. The goal was his fourth of the season. Just about 30 seconds later, the Broncos struck again. Slukynsky cut to the slot and hit twine for a 3-0 lead with under eight minutes to play in the period.

Later, WMU would kill off a slashing penalty, thanks to three saves from Slukynsky. The Broncos carried a three-goal lead into the third period of action.

THIRD PERIOD
Valente opened the period with a strong chance that the Irish goaltender was able to keep out of the net. Following that, Slukynsky and Garrett Szydlowski had shots saved by the visiting netminder.

After some back-and-forth action, WMU went on the power play. It didn't take long for the Brown and Gold to strike, as Wisdom batted a shot out of mid air and into the net for a 4-0 advantage.

Down the stretch, ND would get one last look on the power play. Slukynsky and the penalty killers stood tall and closed out another 4-0 victory over the Fighting Irish.

UP NEXT
The Broncos will travel to Denver to take on the Pioneers on Jan. 9-10. The series opener is slated for 9 PM.
