Broncos Place Second at Jeff Drenth Memorial

MOUNT PLEASANT, Mich. --  The Western Michigan cross country team placed second at the Jeff Drenth Memorial this morning. The Brown and Gold had six runners in the top 25, including four in the top 15.

Lily Overton led the way, placing third with a time of 17:32.10. That was a PR time by more than 30 seconds. She was followed by Lara Machado Pereira, Kaelin Hughes and Madison Zarembski in 11th, 12th and 13th place, respectively. Machado Pereira had a PR time of 17:55.90, Hughes crossed the finish line in 17:57.00 and Zarembski also PR'd with a time of 17:58.70.

Rounding out the scoring lineup was Rebekah Asselin, who concluded the race in a time of 18:10.70. That was a PR time and she placed 18th. Larissa McGrath, Lily Baibak Joy Evans and Lauren Sancrant were also great. They all finished in the top 40 of the race.

McGrath had a time of 18:20.10, Baibak finished in a time of 18:46.70, Evans had a time of 19:09.00 and Sancrant secured a time of 19:13.50. Baibak and Evans were making their college debuts, while McGrath notched a PR.

FROM KEVIN CATALDO
"I'm really pleased with the results today. From top to bottom we ran this as a group and executed it to perfection. This is exactly how we want to start the season. We have room to grow still but come out with a very positive result which is exciting. I thought Lily was poised from the gun and managed a good top end of the field. Then everybody else was just packed together and running really well with big PR's from each of our top six. We had the tightest spread one to five of only 38 seconds which is exceptional. The other thing that I'm excited about is we held people out of this meet that are gonna just add to that depth. Overall, I couldn't be more proud of this group. Lara, Maddie and Kaelin did a great job working as a pack. Bekah and Larissa were just back from them and worked very well together through the field."

UP NEXT
The Broncos will be back in action on Sept. 19 for the George Dales Invite. The Broncos will host the event at The Prairies Golf Course.
