SOUTH BEND, Ind. – The Western Michigan women's soccer team dropped a hard-fought battle at No. 2 Notre Dame on Thursday night at Alumni Field. The Fighting Irish snuck away with a 2-1 victory.
Abby Werthman tallied the lone goal for the Brown and Gold, scoring in the 63rd minute. She is the team's top returning scorer, netting 12 goals in 2024.
FIRST HALF
The Broncos got the first chance of the game, as
Mikayla Coore-Pascal intercepted a pass in the box and fired a shot on net. Her attempt was pushed away for a corner kick. On the corner, the Brown and Gold would get the ball into trouble, but nothing would come of the opportunity.
After a few subs for the Fighting Irish, they would earn a corner kick. Notre Dame would cash in on that chance, making the score 1-0 in the 12th minute. A little bit later, Notre Dame would get a strong shot on net. However, freshman goalkeeper
Reagan Sulaver was able to stop the threat.
Down the stretch of the half, Western Michigan would get a great look on net after a Notre Dame yellow card.
Heidi Thomasma got a head on the free kick, but the Fighting Irish kept the ball out of the net.
With time winding down,
Meredith Vance was able to get two shots. One of those just missed over the top of the net. The Fighting Irish would carry a one-goal lead into the second half of play.
SECOND HALF
Avery Peters opened the second 45 minutes with a great look from just outside the box. However, Notre Dame was able to handle the chance to maintain its one-goal advantage. Following that, Western Michigan blocked a pair of Notre Dame offensive chances.
The Fighting Irish would get another quality chance, earning a penalty kick in the 55th minute. Sulaver made a diving save just inside the right post to keep the Brown and Gold within one.
After defending those looks, WMU went back on the attack. The Broncos forced the Fighting Irish into a bad pass and Werthman took care of the rest, notching her first goal of the season to tie the game. She blasted a shot into the top left corner of the goal in the 63rd minute.
However, about three minutes later, Notre Dame's Izzy Engle was able to push the Irish back in front. Still, the Brown and Gold continued to fight.
Drew Martin and
June Mullen each had looks that Notre Dame was able to handle.
With time winding down, the Brown and Gold earned a corner kick. On that chance, Peters had a header go just over the bar. With under five minutes to play, the Broncos would apply some pressure. But the Fighting Irish would go on to close out the game, 2-1.
