KALAMAZOO, Mich. -- The Western Michigan track and field team will conclude its outdoor regular season schedule this weekend by competing at the Jesse Owens Classic, hosted by Ohio State.
THE BEST IN THE MAC
Earlier this week,
Mabinty Kebe and
Sandra Ferrari were named the Mid-American Conference Track and Field Athletes of the week for their dominant performances at the Clark Wood Open. Both vaulted into the top 10 in program history in their respective events.
Ferrari moved into third all-time in the long jump with a mark of 6.16 meters. That earned her the MAC Field Athlete of the Week award. Heading into this weekend, that mark is the second best in the MAC and the 27th best jump in the NCAA East Region.
Kebe was named the MAC Track Athlete of the Week after collecting a PR time of 58.33 in the 400-meter hurdles. That was good enough to win the race and move her into eighth in program history in the event. Along with that, the Columbus, Ohio native now sits at 43rd in the NCAA.
LEANING ON LILLY
Lillian Zelasko has put together an incredible sophomore season, and she continued her dominance at the Penn Relays last week. The young distance runner collected a 10K time of 34:16.67, which moved her into second all-time in program history.
Her time is currently the best in the MAC and ranks 49th in the NCAA East Region. Zelasko was an All-Region and All-MAC honoree in cross country earlier this year.
STEEPLECHASE SENSATIONS
The WMU steeplechase group has done some incredible things this year, considering a majority of the group hadn't competed in the event prior to this season. The Broncos have
Ava Kurczewski,
Lily Overton,
Lara Machado Pereira and
Madison Zarembski competing in the event, and that group currently ranks 21st in the nation.
The quartet has an average time of 11:03.18. Kurczewski, Overton and Zarembski are all inside the program's top 10, while Machado Pereira currently sits at 11th in program history. WMU is one of two teams in the MAC to be in the nation's top 25 in the event.
