The Spartans notched the contest's first run in the bottom of the opening frame, but Western Michigan came right back in the next half inning. After Connor Ostrander reached on an error, the Broncos got back-to-back singles from Grady Mee and Brendan Harrity, with Harrity's knock bringing Ostrander around to even the contest at 1-1.

Michigan State countered with six in the third and another in the fourth to reclaim the lead, 8-1.

Singles by Dylan Nevar and Lucas Rick put two on with two outs in the fifth for the Brown and Gold, and Avery Thielman delivered a two-run triple to close the gap to 8-3.

After an MSU tally in the bottom of the fifth, Western Michigan picked up one in the sixth to once again pull to within five. Harrity doubled with one out, and then was brought home on a Diego Pena single.

The Spartans responded with an insurance tally in the bottom of the sixth, then pushed across two each in the seventh and eighth frames to put the contest away.

Western Michigan continues its seven-game road stretch with a three-game series at Toledo. First pitch for Thursday's series opener against the Rockets is scheduled for 3 pm on ESPN+.
