Broncos Stymied in Series Opener at Toledo

TOLEDO, Ohio – The Western Michigan baseball team dropped the opener of its three-game Mid-American Conference series at Toledo by a final count of 3-0 on Thursday.

FINAL SCORE: Toledo 3, Western Michigan 0
LOCATION: Scott Park (Toledo, Ohio)

Toledo got on the board first, scratching across the game's first run on a bloop single to left in the home half of the opening frame.

A walk and an error helped Western Michigan threaten in the third, but the potential tying run was cut down at the plate, and the Broncos were turned away.

The Rockets picked up unearned tallies in the fourth and eighth frames to extend the margin to 3-0.

The first-inning marker was the lone earned run against WMU starter Ty McKinstry. The right-hander settled in and set down nine batters in a row at one point. McKinstry went the distance for Western Michigan, yielding one earned run on five hits while collecting five strikeouts in his career-high 8.0 innings of work. It was his second complete game of the campaign, with the other coming in the season-opener against Michigan State.

The WMU offense continued to generate opportunities. The Brown and Gold loaded the bases in the sixth, but a double play ended the threat. The Broncos had runners on the corners with one out in the eighth, but once again a double play kept the visitors off of the scoreboard.

Western Michigan and Toledo continue their three-game series on Friday afternoon. First pitch is set for 3 pm on ESPN+.
