Box Score KALAMAZOO, Mich. -- The Western Michigan women's tennis team split matches with UIC and Oakland on Saturday, falling to the Flames 7-0 before rebounding with a 4-2 win against the Golden Grizzlies.
The Flames took the doubles point from the Broncos after wins on No. 1 and No. 2, with the third match going unfinished. While WMU did not pick up a point in singles,
Christine Gouws,
Polina Khotko,
Audrey Smitek and
Julia Frazier all took their opponents to three sets.
The Broncos earned the doubles point against the Golden Grizzlies.
Lola Glantz and Smitek gave WMU the early advantage with a 6-1 win at No. 1 over Emilia Jarvinen and Warisara Lee. Gouws and
Marielou Baudouin secured the doubles point with a 7-6 tie-breaker win at No. 3 over Nisa Bulut and Josie Ward.
OU tied the match up at 1-1 with Martyna Piechowicz beating Frazier 6-1, 6-2 at No. 6. WMU pushed ahead 2-1 when Glantz earned a 6-1, 6-4 win over Jarvinen at No. 1 and Gouws expanded the lead to 3-1 with a 6-4, 6-1 win over Bulut at No. 2. Lee closed the gap a little bit for the Golden Grizzlies with a 7-6 (7-1, 6-1) win over Khotko, but Baudouin clinched the match-winning point with a 4-6, 6-1, 6-4 win over Ward at No. 5.
Frida Weijerman earned WMU's fifth and final point with a 5-7, 7-5, 1-0 (10-4) win at No. 4 over Edie Hammond.
The Broncos open up MAC play on the road at Ball State on Saturday at 12 p.m.
