ON THE ROAD AGAIN
Western Michigan continues its stretch of five consecutive road games this weekend as it heads down to Oxford for a three-game series at Miami.
LAST TIME OUT
The Broncos won their fifth consecutive game on Tuesday as they held on to beat Northwestern, 2-1.
Reese Gaber went 4.0 no-hit, scoreless innings to get Western Michigan started on the mound, with
Adam Lehmann keeping the Wildcats off of the scoreboard for the next three innings to earn his first collegiate victory.
DJ Thompson then closed it out for WMU to earn his second save of the year.
POWER SCHEDULING
As has been the case the past several years, WMU loaded up its non-conference schedule, and has already played 10 games against Power Conference foes. The Broncos have won their last two against Power Conference opponents, shutting out Michigan, 6-0, last Tuesday and beating Northwestern on Tuesday, 2-1. WMU boasts the 20th-most difficult non-conference schedule in NCAA Division I.
SERIES HISTORY
Western Michigan comes into the weekend with a 105-76 lead in the all-time series against Miami. The Broncos have taken the regular season series from the RedHawks each of the last two seasons, including a three-game sweep last year in Kalamazoo which was WMU's first sweep of MU since 1994. The Brown and Gold have won the series in each of their last two trips to Oxford, taking two out of three in 2023 and three out of four in 2021.
SCOUTING THE REDHAWKS
Miami has been one of the top offenses in the MAC this season, tied for the league lead in runs scored (207) and sitting alone atop the conference in home runs (39, 21st in NCAA DI), walks (144, 26th DI), slugging percentage (.514, 32nd DI) and on-base percentage (.425, 36th DI). MU's Evan Appelwick sits atop the MAC in both home runs (12) and RBIs (37), both of which are in the top-20 nationally.
PITCHER OF THE WEEK
Reese Gaber was named MAC Pitcher of the Week on Monday after his dominant performance in last Tuesday's win at Michigan. The left-hander blanked the Wolverines on one hit over 6.0 innings and did not allow a single baserunner to get past second base. He followed that up this past Tuesday with another dominant showing against a Big Ten team, as he tossed 4.0 no-hit, scoreless frames at Northwestern in an eventual 2-1 WMU victory. Gaber has put together a stretch of 12 consecutive scoreless innings over the course of his last three outings.
McKINSTRY ATTACKS THE MAC
Ty McKinstry has been stellar in his first three MAC outings, turning in three quality starts for the Broncos, including 6.0 innings of one-hit, shutout ball last weekend against Akron. In conference play, the righty owns the third-best ERA (1.89) and second-best opposing batting average (.162).
TANNER AT THE TOP
Western Michigan leadoff hitter
Tanner Mally comes into the weekend ranked third in the MAC in both batting average (.407) and on-base percentage (.505). The sophomore is also in the top-10 in the league in hits (33, T-4) and runs scored (23, T-8). Mally has taken things up a notch in conference play, batting .447 in the first three series.
LOOK AT MEE
Grady Mee has also boosted his batting average in conference games, taking a .319 overall mark and raising it to .387 in MAC play. The junior has been integral in Western Michigan's success with small ball, as he's tied for the league lead in stolen bases with 11 and also tied atop the conference with four sacrifice bunts.
NEVAR MAKES HISTORY
Dylan Nevar made history last weekend against Akron, passing former Bronco and Major Leaguer Matt Mieske (1987-90) for the program's all-time RBI record. The record-breaker was a two-run single in the bottom of the sixth in game two of Friday's doubleheader, which pushed Nevar past Mieske's career total of 174. The redshirt senior currently sits on 177 career RBIs for the Brown and Gold.
