YPSILANTI, Mich. – The Western Michigan track and field team had a strong start to the Indoor MAC Championships this afternoon. The Broncos collected nine points on the opening day, with most of the finals coming tomorrow afternoon.
Bri'Yanna Robinson opened the day with strong results for the Brown and Gold, securing two points and seventh place in the weight throw. She had a top mark of 17.26 meters in the event. Following that,
Lily Overton was able to qualify for the finals in the mile. She posted a time of 4:55.75.
Next up,
Sandra Ferrari,
Mabinty Kebe and
Jade Celestine competed in the 60-meter hurdles. Ferrari was the lone qualifier from the group, recording the top time in the prelims. She crossed the finish line in 8.50. Kebe missed qualifying by .02.
Angel Pratt kept the good luck going by advancing to the finals in the 400-meter dash. She picked up a qualifying time of 56.78. The 60-meter dash group then saw Ferrari make the final with a time of 7.53.
Laurie-Ann Desormes just missed qualifying in the event.
In the 800-meter run,
Ava Kurczewski had a strong showing, earning a time of 2:13.22. She was just on the outside of qualifying for tomorrows final. Up next was the 200-meter dash, which saw Pratt competing. She finished with a time of 25.47, which came up short of qualifying for the finals.
To close out the individual running events, WMU had
Lillian Zelasko fall just short of scoring in the 5K. She posted a time of 17:06:16. The distance medley relay team then earned a point, thanks to an eighth-place finish. They had a time of 12:12.47.
To round out the night, Ferrari added more points to the board with a third-place finish in the long jump. She had a top jump of 5.93 meters.
