Women's Basketball Hosts NIU for Annual Play4Kay Game

KALAMAZOO, Mich. -- The Western Michigan women's basketball team welcomes Northern Illinois to University Arena on Saturday at 12 p.m. for its annual Play4Kay Game.

Tickets are on-sale now at www.wmubroncos.com/tickets. Fans who purchase a women's basketball ticket can exchange that afterward for a free upper-level admission ticket to the WMU Men's Basketball game that follows. If fans have a ticket to the men's basketball game against Miami, it is also good for a general admission seat for the NIU game.

LAST WEEK
The Broncos picked up two road wins last week. WMU beat Akron 70-64 to improve to 6-5 in MAC play. Western Michigan then had its road leg of the MAC-Sunbelt Conference Challenge, beating Texas State 59-50. The Broncos wrapped up the MAC-SBC Challenge with a 2-0 record.

SCOUTING THE HUSKIES
Like the Broncos, Northern Illinois has won its last two games. For the MAC-SBC Challenge, the Huskies went down to Appalachian State and earned a 75-62 win. Prior to that they took down Kent State at home, 73-69. The win over the Golden Flashes moved NIU up to ninth place in the MAC standings, just outside the reach of a MAC Tournament spot.

NIU is averaging 66.6 points per game and allowing 70.0. The Huskies are also shooting 43.5 percent from the field and 37.4 from three. Chelby Koker leads the team with 13.2 points per game. Brooke Stonebaker averages 11.0 points per game and leads the team with 6.7 rebounds per game. Lexi Carlsen is the top threat from deep, with a team-best 51 three-pointers. Carlsen is making them at a 43.6 percent clip.

50
Western Michigan hit over 50 percent of its shots in a game in the win over Akron, going 24-for-46 (52.2 percent). It as the fourth time that WMU had eclipsed 50 percent this season, goin 3-1 in those four.

The Broncos have also shot a combined 50 percent from the field in the past two games, going 43-for-86, having done so only twice before during the season.

A BRIEF DISRUPTION
Junior transfer Marina Asensio had had a season-low two points in a loss to Buffalo. That game had ended a 14-game streak of at least 10 or more points, dating back to a 24-point performance at Detroit Mercy.

The slump didn't last long, as Asensio put up 17 points in a loss at Ball State. Last week, she scored 21 points in the win at Akron and then added 13 in the victory at Texas State.

ON THE HORIZON
Western Michigan hosts Bowling Green on Wednesday at 7 p.m. and then heads on the road to Central Michigan on Saturday for a 1 p.m. tip. Both games can be watched live on ESPN+.
