Carlson hits career-high five threes in final non-conference game at No. 19 Ohio State

COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Western Michigan University women's basketball team weren't able to contain the 19th ranked Ohio State Buckeyes in a 95-47 loss.

Senior guard Alli Carlson made a career-high five threes on Monday night to lead the Broncos in Columbus. Carlson was the only WMU player to get into double digits, scoring 15 points through 38 minutes of play. Four other members of the Brown and Gold scored eight points each, while senior forward Ariana Wilkes led on defense with 10 boards.

Western Michigan won the tip to begin Monday night's action, but it was Ohio State who got on the board first. The Broncos were able to match the Buckeyes shots through the first four minutes. WMU then fell behind on an 8-2 run as the Ohio State lead grew to eight. The Brown and Gold were able to get the deficit down to three on Carlson's second trey of the night.

Carlson added another three before the first quarter was over to bring Western Michigan to 15 points. The rest of the Broncos offense was quiet as it became a 28-15 game in favor of the Buckeyes after 10 minutes. It was a slow second quarter on offense for both teams as only 13 points were scored in the first half of the frame.

The fourth three of the game for Carlson was made early in the quarter as the WMU offense went cold over the next six minutes. The Brown and Gold scored seven points in the final three minutes of the first half, going into the locker room trailing 53-25. Western Michigan scored the first bucket of the second half then quickly added another in the first minute.

The four points in the first minute were the majority of the Broncos offense as they went on a seven-minute scoring drought. The cold snap was ended by sophomore guard Alli Harness with a three at just over two minutes to go. WMU added another layup before the third quarter was over from sophomore guard Kailey Starks.

The Brown and Gold had their best run of the night in the fourth quarter, stringing together six points before the halfway mark. Western Michigan briefly matched Ohio State in shots. But the Buckeyes again put together a substantial run, keeping the Broncos from scoring in the final two and a half minutes for the 95-47 final.

WMU will have the next week off from competition for the Christmas holidays. The Brown and Gold return to the court to begin Mid-American Conference play on New Year's Eve. Western Michigan makes its first trip to UMass as conference foes to close out the calendar year. Tip-off from Amherst, Mass. is set for 1 p.m. on Wednesday, Dec. 31.
