Game Recap: Men's Ice Hockey |

Broncos Blank River Hawks in Series Finale

LOWELL, Mass. – The Western Michigan hockey team dominated UMass Lowell on Saturday night at the Tsongas Center, claiming a 6-0 victory.

Ty Henricks and William Whitelaw lit the lamp twice, while Liam Valente and Samuel Sjolund each scored once. Hampton Slukynsky made 19 saves in net to earn his first shutout of the season.

FIRST PERIOD
After a big save from Slukynsky to open the game, Lowell was sent off for too many men on the ice. WMU peppered shots on net, but UML goaltender Austin Elliott stood tall and helped the River Hawks get back to even strength.

A few minutes after that, Western Michigan broke through. Grant Slukynsky slid a nice pass to Valente, who twisted and fired a shot just inside the left post for the game's first goal. The tally was his second of the season.

The River Hawks earned a power play in the back half of the period. However, that was quickly negated with UML sent off for roughing moments later. The two teams eventually worked back to full strength.

Lowell would return to the man advantage with under two minutes to play in the opening frame. WMU did well to stop the threat, but UML carried 25 seconds of power-play time into the second period.

SECOND PERIOD
The Broncos had no issues getting back to full strength, as UML didn't get a shot in the final 25 seconds of the man advantage. Now back to 5-on-5, WMU's offense took over. Henricks scored his first goal of the season just under three minutes into the frame. He followed that up with another goal less than three minutes later to make it 3-0 in favor of the visitors.

The River Hawks settled things down a bit, but Valente and Cole Crusberg-Roseen found some quality chances in the back half of the period. Valente's shot rattled the post. The Broncos went on the power play with just over five minutes remaining in the period. Despite multiple opportunities, UML was able to work back to full strength.

However, Western Michigan's offense wasn't done, as Zaccharya Wisdom made a nice play with the puck behind the net to create some space. He found Whitelaw wide open in the slot, and he rifled a shot over the shoulder of Elliott to make it 4-0 Broncos heading into the final 20 minutes of play.

THIRD PERIOD
The Brown and Gold had a flurry of chances early in the final frame, and they eventually found the back of the net, with Sjolund getting on the board. The goal was his first of the season.

Following that, the two teams played 4-on-4 for a couple of minutes. Neither team would do any damage, as the game moved to the middle portion of the period. Lowell got a power play with about six minutes to play, but the Broncos were the ones to take advantage of the opportunity.

After some nice passing, Whitelaw was able to bury his second goal of the night. Tyler MacKenzie collected his first career point on the play. The Brown and Gold would go on to close out a 6-0 victory on the road.
