ANN ARBOR, Mich. – The Western Michigan hockey team was upended 4-0 at Michigan on Thursday night at Yost Ice Arena. The two teams will meet again tomorrow night at 7 PM at Lawson Arena.
FIRST PERIOD
Michigan scored a little under two minutes into the game to take an early lead, but WMU started to settle in from there. The Broncos would get the next five shots, including a great look from Zack Sharp.
Just over six minutes in, Western Michigan got the game's first power play. After a few chances on net, Michigan would return to full strength. After some back-and-forth action, the Brown and Gold would go on the penalty kill.
The Broncos would limit the chances and get back to full strength. WMU then got another turn on the man advantage, with the Wolverines sent off for hooking. Western Michigan would again threaten with multiple chances, but UM returned to full strength.
To end the period, WMU went back on the power play. After a flurry of chances were saved, the Broncos carried a little over a minute of power-play time into the second period of play.
SECOND PERIOD
The Wolverines would get back to full strength, and then the Brown and Gold would be sent off for hooking and slashing to give UM four minutes on the man advantage.
The Wolverines cashed in to make the score 2-0. A little bit after that, Michigan received another power play. This time, WMU would get the job done and return to full strength.
The Brown and Gold went to the man advantage late in the period. They would generate a few strong rushes to end the frame, carrying more than a minute of power-play time into the final period of play.
THIRD PERIOD
WMU would commit a penalty of its own early in the final frame, giving UM a power play after it returned to full strength. The Wolverines would again score on the man advantage, making it 3-0 in favor of the home team.
The Broncos didn't stop fighting, as they earned a power play with Michigan sent off for diving. Zach Nehring and Owen Michaels had the best looks on net, but the Wolverines were again able to get back to even strength.
Western Michigan killed off another penalty in the back half of the period. Down the stretch, WMU would pull its goalie looking to make something happen. Michigan would then get called for a penalty, making it 6-on-4.
With time winding down, Michigan threw a puck toward its bench, hitting a player getting off the ice. The puck eventually went in, giving UM a 4-0 advantage. WMU would challenge for a puck out of play, but the referees determined that since the play happened in the neutral zone that the goal would stand as called.
The two teams skated out the rest of the time and concluded the game.

The two teams will meet again for the series finale tomorrow night at Lawson Arena. Puck drop is set for 7 PM.
