KALAMAZOO, Mich. – Western Michigan senior forward
Owen Lobsinger totaled 11 points and grabbed 13 rebounds to secure his first double-double of the season, but the Broncos fell, 76-70, to Toledo in the MAC opener on Saturday afternoon at University Arena.
Lobsinger's 13 rebounds established a new career high and marked a new season-best by a Bronco. It was the third double-double of the senior's career. Lobsinger's 13 boards helped Western Michigan (3-10, 0-1 MAC) dominate on the glass, 53-41, which included a 22-10 advantage in offensive rebounds. The 53 rebounds tied the team's season high, and the plus-12 margin marked the fifth time this season WMU has had a double-digit rebounding advantage.
Chansey Willis Jr. paced Western Michigan in scoring with 21 points and in assists with seven.
JaVaughn Hannah added 13 points and
Donovan Williams chipped in nine off of the WMU bench.
The two teams stayed within three points of each other and traded the lead back and forth a few times through the first half of the opening period. With the contest even at 21-21, Toledo (7-6, 1-0) used a 12-2 run to open up a 33-23 advantage. The Broncos countered by scoring 10 of the final 12 points of the half to trim the deficit to 35-33 heading into the break.
Western Michigan drew back level early in the second half, as Willis hit a short jumper to tie it up at 40-40 at the 15:45 mark. Toledo answered with a 12-4 run to move back ahead, 52-44, just past the midway point of the period.
Toledo got its advantage up into double-digits again, 67-57, with 2:29 to play. The Broncos whittled the gap down to five in the final minute, but could get no closer.
For the game, the Broncos hit 34.2 percent (26-of-76) from the floor, while the Rockets made 39.1 percent (25-of-64) from the field.
