DETROIT, Mich. – The Western Michigan women's soccer team had a dominating effort against Detroit Mercy on Sunday afternoon, defeating the Titans by a final score of 3-0. The win improved WMU's record to 3-1-2 on the season.
The Broncos had a well-rounded offensive attack, getting goals from three different players.
Jen Blitchok,
Jenna Blackburn and
Abby Werthman each found the back of the net in the game. Werthman also chipped in two assists to finish with four points in the match.
FIRST HALF
Madi Canada got WMU's first look of the game in the opening 10 minutes of the first half, which set the tone for the match. A few moments later, Blackburn fired a shot off of the crossbar. The Broncos finally broke through in the 19th minute, as Blitchok tallied her league leading seventh goal of the season. Werthman collected the assist on the goal.
As the game progressed to the middle portion of the first 45 minutes, Western Michigan began firing a flurry of shots at the Detroit Mercy net.
Brielle Gomez and Werthman had the best of those chances. However, the Titans would keep themselves within one down the stretch of the first half.
In the back half of the opening 45 minutes, the Broncos had a great look on a corner kick with under two minutes to play. Detroit Mercy would eventually clear the chance, and the Brown and Gold entered halftime with a 1-0 lead.
SECOND HALF
Not much changed in the second 45 minutes, as WMU continued its offensive onslaught. The Broncos had four shots in the opening 10 minutes and eventually found the game's second goal in the 57th minute. Blackburn blasted a shot by the keeper to make it a 2-0 WMU lead.
Not even 10 minutes later, Werthman found some open space, thanks to a pass from Blitchok, and she tallied her second goal of the 2024 season to push the WMU lead to 3-0. Following that, Blitchok had two more looks that Detroit Mercy would keep out of the net.
In the final 10 minutes, Western Michigan pumped the breaks and found just one shot.
Jada Burgin had the scoring chance for the Broncos. The WMU defense also blocked a shot, preserving the team's third shutout of the season.
