CHICAGO, Ill. – The Western Michigan women's soccer team earned a draw against DePaul in its final game of the non-conference schedule. The Broncos and Blue Demons ended the game with a final score of 1-1.
Drew Martin had the lone goal of the game for WMU on a penalty kick in the first half. That marked her first goal of the season.
FIRST HALF
The Broncos had plenty of chances in the opening 10 minutes of the game, getting three corner kicks in that stretch.
Jen Blitchok had a nice look stopped by Blue Demons goalkeeper Elena Milam during that stretch.
Not too long after that, Blitchok had another chance. However, Milam was able to make a stop on the right side of the net. DePaul would get its first shot on net in the 27th minute.
Lauren Boafo would handle the chance and keep the score tied at 0-0.
Down the stretch of the first half, neither team would find many great chances on net. But the Broncos would make the most of their limited opportunities. DePaul was called for a handball in the box, giving WMU a penalty kick. Martin stepped up and buried a shot by the keeper to give the Brown and Gold a 1-0 lead heading into the second half.
SECOND HALF
DePaul came out aggressive in the opening portion of the second 45 minutes, getting a shot on Boafo in the opening minute. The senior keeper and the WMU defense would stop the chance to maintain the 1-0 lead. Following that,
Emily Pagett got the first shot of the half for the Broncos.
After that chance, Blitchok nearly made it 2-0. However, DePaul was able to make a stop on a shot on the right side of the net to keep it a one-goal game. About 20 minutes into the second half,
Madi Canada had another great look for the Broncos. The Blue Demons would make another stop on the attempt.
Down the stretch, Western Michigan would control most of the play, but it would be DePaul who would find the game's second goal. Freya Jupp knotted the game at 1-1 in the 86th minute. With time ticking down,
Callie Cunningham would find one more shot for WMU. In the end, the game would end in a draw.
