Broncos Open MAC Play with 1-1 Draw at Ohio

ATHENS, Ohio – The Western Michigan women's soccer team improved its Mid-American Conference regular season unbeaten streak to 13 games with a 1-1 draw at Ohio on Thursday afternoon.

After going down early in the second half, Abby Werthman was able to find the equalizing goal with under 10 minutes to play. The goal was her third of the season and second in the last three games.

FIRST HALF
The Broncos controlled much of the play in the opening few minutes, getting a shot from Werthman in the fifth minute. Her look missed just over the net. After some back-and-forth play, Werthamn found another look off of a great crossing pass. Her second look of the afternoon would miss wide.

Not too long after Werthman's chance, Maya Dean took aim at the net and fired a shot at Ohio keeper Celeste Sloma. Dean's shot would end up going wide of the net. With about 15 minutes left, Abby Baldridge got her first look of the game. She sent a shot over the bar for a goal kick.

Late in the first half, Ohio had a couple of strong offensive chances. Off of a corner kick, the Broncos were able to block a Bobcats shot in the box. Moments after that, Lauren Boafo made the first save of the match on a low shot on the left side of the net to keep the score tied.

The half would end with the score tied at 0-0. The teams combined for seven shots but just one on net.

SECOND HALF
Early in the second 45 minutes, Ava Beckett made a great defensive play on a strong Ohio attack. The Bobcats played a ball into the box and Beckett raced over to send the ball out of trouble. Just moments after that, Jen Blitchok nearly put the Broncos in front. Her shot just missed outside the left post.

The pace started to pick up after that, as Callie Cunningham and Maya Dean each had looks. However, Ohio would be the team to find the back of the net first, taking a 1-0 lead in the 55th minute.

Ohio would find another quality look in the 59th minute, as the Bronco defense was forced to clear the ball off of the line. Following that chance, Dean would get another look at the net. Sloma was able to scoop up the shot to keep Ohio in front, 1-0.

In the final 20 minutes, Boafo made a beautiful save, punching the ball just over the crossbar to keep WMU within one goal. Moments later, an Ohio yellow card gave the Broncos a great scoring chance. Werthman blasted a shot on net, but Sloma was able to make a sprawling save on the opportunity.

However, Werthman wasn't done there, as her next shot on Sloma found the back of the net to tie the game at 1-1. The goal was her third of the season and came in the 82nd minute. Following that, the Broncos nearly went in front on a Blitchok header, but Sloma was in the right place at the right time to keep the game tied.

In the final five minutes of action, Cunningham would get one last look for WMU. Sloma would get her hands on the shot to end the threat and finish the game in a 1-1 draw.
