KALAMAZOO, Mich. – The Western Michigan men's tennis team picked up eight total wins on the opening day of hosting the WMU/Vredevelt Invitational on Friday.
The action started in the morning with the first round of doubles play, outdoors at Sorensen Courts.
Drew Evans and
Oscar Corwin were the lone WMU team to pick up a victory, defeating Baldi and Singh from Butler, 6-1.
The Broncos saw more success singles, with
Ashton Adesoro,
Jack Davison,
Anton Arzhankin, Corwin, and Drew Moriarty all picking up wins. Adesoro picked up a 7-5, 6-0 win over Avdeev from Youngstown State. Davison earned a 6-4, 4-6, 1-0 (10-5) victory against Cardelli from YSU, while Arzhankin won 6-1, 6-0 against Butler's Joss. Corwin took down BU's Lama with a 7-5, 2-6, 1-0 (11-9) win, with Moriarty winning 6-4, 6-3 over Giles from DePaul.
The second round of doubles was shifted to West Hills Athletic Club due to rain, where the Broncos had more fortune. WMU's pairing of Arzhankin and
Alex Antonopoulos defeated Balci and Van Craenenbroeck from Youngstown State, 6-1. Davison and Adesoro picked up a 6-2 win over the Blue Demon's Giles and Gitschel, while Moriarty and
Brogan Pierce picked a 7-6 (4) win against YSU's Mishiro and Woiten. For Pierce, it was his first action since the Spring of 2023 after missing last season win an injury.
Western Michigan wraps up the invitational on Saturday, with two rounds of singles and one more round of doubles. Action is slated to begin at 9 a.m., but could be delayed if the courts outdoors at Sorensen are still wet. Admission is free.
