IN-STATE SHOWDOWN
Fresh off of its upset of #24 Marquette on Sunday, Western Michigan heads to East Lansing on Wednesday to take on Michigan State. The Broncos went 5-0 against in-state opposition last year, including a 3-0 victory at Michigan. MSU holds a 20-7-1 advantage in the all-time series, with WMU's last win in the series coming back in 1993.
LAST TIME OUT
Western Michigan is coming off of a pair of matches against top-25 foes over the weekend in Milwaukee. WMU fell to #13 Kansas on Saturday, but bounced back to upset #24 Marquette in four sets on Sunday. The victory over the Golden Eagles was the first for the Broncos against a ranked opponent since a 2003 win at #18 Ohio State.
PLAYERS OF THE WEEK
The Broncos swept the MAC Player of the Week awards on Monday, with
Andelyn Simkins named Defensive Player of the Week,
Keona Salesman collecting Offensive Player of the Week and
Logan Case picking up her second straight Setter of the Week award. Simkins averaged an eye-popping 8.00 digs/set for the weekend and totaled a career-high 39 in Sunday's upset win over #24 Marquette. Salesman tallied 4.86 kills/set on a .289 hitting percentage, while Case registered a pair of double-doubles and totaled 11.86 assists/set.
DIGGING IN DEFENSIVELY
Andelyn Simkins' career-high 39 digs on Sunday marked the second-most in a four-set match in program history. The fifth-year libero's big day improved her digs/set average to 5.95, the second-highest mark in NCAA Division I. Her defensive prowess also has the Broncos ranked fourth in the nation in team digs/set at 19.00.
SETTING THE STANDARD
Logan Case ran her double-double streak to four consecutive matches over the weekend and moved into second in the nation in assists/set at 11.95. The fifth-year setter is the NCAA's active leader in career assists with 5,324, which ranks as the seventh-most in Mid-American Conference history.
KILLER KEONA
Keona Salesman recorded double-digit kills in both matches over the weekend, giving her double-digits in all five matches so far this season. The fifth-year is atop the MAC in kills/set with 3.89.
SCOUTING THE SPARTANS
Michigan State enters Wednesday on a three-match winning streak after going 3-0 at its home tournament against Western Kentucky, Marist and Loyola Chicago. Junior outside hitter Akasha Anderson was named the Tournament MVP after picking up 39 kills over the three matches.
