Women's Soccer Earns Draw Against No. 24 Iowa

KALAMAZOO, Mich. -- The Western Michigan women's soccer team played to a 1-1 draw against No. 24 Iowa on Thursday afternoon at the WMU Soccer Complex. That result moved the Broncos' record to 1-0-1 on the season. Jen Blitchok provided the lone goal for WMU, which is her third tally in just two games this season.

FIRST HALF
It didn't take long for the nationally-ranked Hawkeyes to flex their muscles, as they found the back of the net on their first shot of the game. Meike Ingles got the goal under three minutes into the game. However, the Broncos settled in from there, clamping down on the defensive end.

Western Michigan got its first shot on goal just over 17 minutes into the first half, as Abby Werthman tested Iowa goalkeeper Macy Enneking. Moments after that, WMU keeper Ava Wilberding would make a nice save on Berit Parten to keep the score at 1-0 in favor of Iowa.

Eventually, the Broncos would breakthrough, thanks to some great passing in the middle of the field. Enneking was caught out of her net when Heidi Thomasma found Blitchok open for a look. Blitchok looped the ball over Enneking's head to knot the game at 1-1 just over 29 minutes into the match.

Down the stretch of the first 45 minutes, neither team would find many chances. The game was tied going into the second half.

SECOND HALF
Iowa ramped up the pressure in the second half, getting 17 shots in the second 45 minutes. However, Wilberding and the WMU defense were up to the test, keeping the ball out of the back of the net for the remainder of the game.

Around the 65 minute mark, Wilberding made back-to-back saves on Rielee Fetty and Parten to keep the game tied. Later, Elle Otto rang a shot off the crossbar, but the WMU defense would clear the ball to avoid any more danger. The game remained tied moving the final 10 minutes.

After a few Iowa looks were turned away, WMU got two shots from Werthman. In the end, nothing would find the back of the net, and the two teams ended the game with a tie.
