KANSAS CITY, Mo. – The Western Michigan men's basketball program has earned the Team Academic Excellence Award from the National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC) for the 2023-24 season. Additionally, six Broncos were named to the NABC Honors Court.
The NABC Team Academic Excellence Awards recognize men's basketball programs that completed the 2023-24 academic year with a team GPA of 3.0 or higher. The NABC Honors Court includes junior, senior and graduate student men's basketball players who finished the 2023-24 year with a cumulative GPA of 3.2 or higher.
Western Michigan surpassed a 3.0 team GPA in both semesters, posting a program-record 3.45 team mark in the fall, and following it up with a 3.36 GPA for the spring semester. The Broncos owned a cumulative GPA of 3.41 for the entirety of the academic year, a new program record.
This year marks the fifth time WMU has received the NABC Team Academic Excellence Award. The Broncos are amongst the honorees for the fourth time in the past six seasons, with Western Michigan also having earned the award in 2019, 2020 and 2023.
The six student-athletes named to the NABC Honors Court is also a new record for Western Michigan. WMU's honorees are listed below:
Javonte Brown – University Studies, 3.69 GPA
Anthony Crump – Sports Coaching (Master's), 3.30 GPA
Alika Edmonds – Social Work, 3.63 GPA
Brandon Muntu – University Studies, 3.61 GPA
Jack Stefanski – Criminal Justice, 3.93 GPA
Markhi Strickland – University Studies, 3.29 GPA
