ST. CLOUD, Minn. – After trailing most of the game, Western Michigan used a big third period and a game-winning tally from
Alex Bump to edge St. Cloud State, 4-3, in overtime on Friday night at the Herb Brooks National Hockey Center.
Bump netted two goals on the night, while
Luke Grainger and
Ethan Phillips provided the rest of the offense. Seven different Broncos had at least one point in the game.
FIRST PERIOD
The Broncos dominated much of the first period, outshooting the Huskies 9-3 in the first 20 minutes. After a save by
Cameron Rowe in the opening minute, WMU would go on to get the next nine shots on net.
Zak Galambos had the best look of the bunch, nearly putting WMU in front 1-0 with under nine minutes to play in the frame. Minutes later, St. Cloud State would get on the board, thanks to a fortuitous bounce by the net.
The teams would combine for one shot on net over the last six minutes of the period, and the Broncos went into the first intermission trailing by one.
SECOND PERIOD
The Huskies were awarded a power play in the opening minute of the second frame, but the Broncos killed it off with ease. SCSU got just two shots on the man advantage.
Following that power play, the Brown and Gold started to find more looks on offense, with
Sam Colangelo getting a strong look on SCSU goaltender Isak Posch.
However, SCSU would find the next goal to take a 2-0 lead with under six minutes to play in the period. Not even 30 seconds later, though, Bump lit the lamp on a feed from Grainger to make the score 2-1.
To end the period, the Huskies would add one more tally to carry a two-goal lead into the third period.
THIRD PERIOD
The Broncos came out aggressive in the third frame, with Grainger netting a goal in the opening five minutes to make it a 3-2 game. The senior captain tipped a Bump shot in front of the net to get the Brown and Gold back within one.
Just a few minutes later,
Owen Michaels blasted a shot on net that bounced off of Posch's pad right to the stick of Phillips. He snapped home a rebound to knot the game at 3-3 not even seven minutes into the third period.
Down the stretch of the period, WMU was forced to kill off a too many men on the ice penalty. St. Cloud State was unable to generate a shot on goal during the man advantage.
In the closing minutes of the third frame, SCSU thought it had scored the go-ahead goal, but Rowe made a big glove save to keep the game tied. The play was reviewed and the call on the ice stood as no goal. The two teams headed to overtime tied at 3-3.
OVERTIME
St. Cloud State would get the opening shot of the overtime session, but just a few minutes in, Colangelo would drop a pass to Bump who made a nice toe drag in front of the net. He wristed a shot by Posch for the game-winning goal.
