Broncos Drop Road Game at St. Cloud State

ST. CLOUD, Minn. – Western Michigan dropped its series finale, 3-0, against St. Cloud State on Saturday night at the Herb Brooks National Hockey Center.

Cameron Rowe made 24 saves in net, while Carter Berger led the way with five shots on goal.

FIRST PERIOD
The Broncos got the first three shots of the game, courtesy of Luke Grainger, Zak Galambos and Cedric Fiedler. WMU held the Huskies without a shot on goal for the opening six minutes of the game.

Just under seven minutes in, SCSU was sent off for boarding. After being reviewed for a major penalty, the call on the ice stood as a minor penalty. The Brown and Gold couldn't muster a goal despite some good looks on net, and the game remained tied.

With under nine minutes to play in the opening 20 minutes, the Broncos were sent off for hooking, giving St. Cloud State its first power play of the night. Rowe and the WMU defense would allow just two shots, and the Broncos eventually returned to full strength still tied at 0-0.

Over the final six minutes of the period, each team would get two shots, including a blast from Owen Michaels that nearly put Western Michigan in front. Instead, the two team would head to the first intermission without a score on either side.

SECOND PERIOD
The second frame opened with a save from Rowe, and the Broncos eventually got a good look on net from Galambos a few moments later. After some back-and-forth action, WMU earned a power play, with SCSU getting sent off for interference.

On the man advantage, Sam Colangelo was able to get the best look on a one-timer from the left faceoff dot. The Huskies would return to full strength and went on their own power play a few minutes later.

SCSU would get two shots, but Rowe and the WMU defense stood tall and kept the game 0-0. The two teams would enter the final period in search of the game's first goal.

THIRD PERIOD
After a Bronco icing to open the period, St. Cloud State was able to take a 1-0 lead 17 seconds into the frame. From there, Ethan Phillips and Alex Bump were able to get looks on net that Isak Posch turned away to keep the Huskies in front.

As the game progressed to the back half of the period, WMU went on the power play, thanks to an interference call. The Broncos had a ton of looks on net, but nothing would light the lamp, and the Huskies remained in front going into the final five minutes.

Western Michigan pulled its goalie with about three minutes to play, and St. Cloud State ended up tacking on two-empty net goals to secure a 3-0 victory.

UP NEXT
The Broncos will remain on the road, as they head to North Dakota next weekend. Friday's series opener is set for 8:00 p.m. on CBS Sports Network.
