Balanced Broncos Blow Past Buffalo, 91-72

KALAMAZOO, Mich. – The Western Michigan men's basketball team had four players score in double-figures and seven players net seven or more points in a 91-72 victory over Buffalo on Saturday at University Arena. The win secures WMU's first-ever season sweep over the Bulls.

Seth Hubbard and B. Artis White led the way for Western Michigan (10-17, 7-7 MAC) with 18 points apiece, while Javonte Brown was right behind them with 17 points. JaVaughn Hannah contributed 11 points, while Owen Lobsinger chipped in nine. The WMU bench combined for more than 40 points for the second straight game, outscoring UB's reserves 44-8.

WMU enjoyed a 41-32 rebounding advantage over the Bulls (4-23, 2-12), led by seven boards apiece from Brown, Hannah and Jefferson De La Cruz Monegro.

In addition to his 18 points, White tied his career high with eight assists and also collected five rebounds. It marked the second time this season the redshirt junior has had at least 10 points, 5 rebounds and five assists in a game.

The Broncos got off to a fast start, hitting four three-pointers in the opening five-and-a-half minutes to race out to a 19-7 advantage. A 9-0 response by the Bulls trimmed the WMU edge to three, 23-20, halfway through the opening period.

Western Michigan countered with the next eight points to spark a 19-5 surge, which pushed the lead to 42-25 at the 4:43 mark. The Brown and Gold took a 47-32 advantage into the locker room after shooting 52.9 percent (18-of-34) from the floor and 61.5 percent (8-of-13) from beyond the arc in the opening 20 minutes.

An 8-2 run in the early portions of the second half helped WMU expand its lead to 23, 68-45, its largest lead of the contest. Buffalo slowly worked away at the margin and got it all the way down to 10, 74-64, with 7:16 remaining. The Bulls got it back down to 10 again, 80-70, with 3:10 to go, but Western Michigan put the game away by scoring 11 of the contest's final 13 points.

The Broncos shot 44.4 percent (28-of-63) from the floor and hit 47.8 percent (11-of-23) from three-point range in the contest. Western Michigan also connected on 75.0 percent (24-of-32) of its free throws. Buffalo made 43.1 percent (25-of-58) of its field goals for the day. The Brown and Gold were plus-five in turnover margin, forcing the Bulls into 15 miscues.
