Western Michigan Clipped by Eagles in Ypsilanti

YPSILANTI, Mich. – The Western Michigan men's basketball team dropped a 70-67 decision at Eastern Michigan on Tuesday evening in what was WMU's penultimate road game of the regular season.
JaVaughn Hannah canned a career-high six three-pointers to lead the Broncos (10-18, 7-8 MAC) in scoring with 18 points. Joining Hannah in double-figures for Western Michigan were Javonte Brown (16 points), Seth Hubbard (12) and Owen Lobsinger (12). Hubbard paced WMU on the glass with a career-high tying eight rebounds and handed out a team-high five assists in the contest.

The two teams went back and forth in the early stages of the contest, with the lead changing hands nine times in the opening 10-plus minutes. Hubbard's third three-pointer of the first half gave Western Michigan a 20-19 edge, but the Eagles (12-16, 5-10) responded with a 14-2 surge to build a 33-22 cushion. The Broncos came right back with 10 of the final 12 points of the period to trim EMU's halftime advantage to 35-32. WMU held Eastern Michigan off of the scoreboard for the final three-plus minutes of the opening stanza.

A Lobsinger triple followed by a pair of free throws by Brown put the Broncos briefly on top, 44-43, with 15:15 to play. Eastern Michigan countered with seven in a row to go back ahead, 50-44. EMU's lead got to as many as seven, 55-48, with 10:33 remaining.

Western Michigan answered with an 8-2 spurt, which included a pair of triples by Hannah, to close the gap to one, then moments later tied it up at 58-58 on an Anthony Crump dunk with just over eight minutes to play. EMU crept ahead again by four, 66-62, and the Broncos were able to get within one twice, but could not wrestle the lead back from the Eagles. WMU had one last chance at a three-pointer at the buzzer to send the game into overtime, but the shot did not fall.

The Broncos connected on 24-of-58 (41.4 percent) from the floor and hit 13 three-pointers, the third straight game with double-digit triples for the Brown and Gold. Eastern Michigan made 27-of-63 (42.9 percent) field goal attempts for the evening.

Western Michigan hits the road for the final time in the regular season on Saturday afternoon as it visits Ball State. The Broncos and Cardinals are scheduled to tip at 2 pm on ESPN+.
