Western Michigan Routs Miami to Secure Season Sweep

KALAMAZOO, Mich. – The Western Michigan men's basketball team completed a season sweep over Miami on Tuesday night as it ran away from the RedHawks, 77-58, at University Arena. It marks the first time the Broncos have swept the season series from MU since the 2017-18 season.

Four players scored in double-figures for Western Michigan (9-17, 6-7 MAC), led by Seth Hubbard's 19 points. He was joined in double-digits by B. Artis White (14), Owen Lobsinger (12) and Max Burton (10). Burton's 10 points established a new career high for the redshirt freshman.

The Broncos enjoyed a 43-36 margin on the glass, with Javonte Brown and Anthony Crump leading the way with seven rebounds apiece. Jefferson De La Cruz Monegro handed out a game-high five assists, while White was right behind him with four.

Tuesday's game marked the 136th as a Bronco for senior center Titus Wright, setting the new all-time program record for games played.

Miami (12-14, 6-7) held an 8-7 edge four minutes into the proceedings, but Western Michigan then ripped off a 22-4 surge to take a 29-12 lead at the 8:58 mark. The margin reached 18, 35-17, after a De La Cruz Monegro three-pointer, but the RedHawks countered with 12 consecutive points and tallied 16 of the period's final 19 points to trim WMU's halftime advantage to 38-33.

After a triple got the visitors to within four, 40-36, at the 17:33 mark, Western Michigan rattled off 11 in a row to boost its cushion back to 15, 51-36. During the run, the Brown and Gold kept the RedHawks off of the scoreboard for nearly four-and-a-half minutes. Miami got as close as 12, 55-43, near the midway point of the half, but a 15-2 WMU surge put the game out of reach.

The Broncos connected on 41.3 percent (26-of-63) from the field for the evening, including 44.8 percent (13-of-29) from downtown. WMU also canned 12-of-15 (80.0 percent) from the charity stripe. Miami was held to 33.9 percent (19-of-56) from the floor and just 26.1 percent (6-of-23) from three-point range.

Western Michigan continues its homestand on Saturday afternoon as it welcomes Buffalo to Kalamazoo. Saturday is a doubleheader at University Arena, with the women's team set to face Central Michigan at noon, followed by the Bronco men's team taking on UB at 2:30.
