ROME, Ga. -- Western Michigan's Anton Arzhankin fell in the Singles Semifinals at the ITA Conference Masters Championships on Saturday, ending his run in the tournament but qualifying for the NCAA Indoor Championships
Arzhankin was matched up against Pacific's Tiago Silva. In the first set, Silva got out to a 3-1 lead, but Arzhankin answered by winning the next three games to take a 4-3 advantage the two battled back and forth, with Arzhankin taking a 6-5 lead but Silva was able to tie it up at 6-6. Silva then won the tie-breaker set, 7-3.
In the second set, Arzhankin won the first game but Silva then won six straight to seal the match victory 7-6 (7-3), 6-1.
Because Arzhankin made it to the semifinals, he earned one of the four berths to the NCAA Indoor Championships, taking place at Baylor University Nov. 19-24.
To get to the semifinals, Arzhankin defeated Northern Arizona's Daniel Torres in the Quarterfinals on Friday. Arzhankin dropped the opening set in a tie-breaker, 6-7 (1-7), but won the next two sets 6-4, 6-2 for the match win.
Also competing at the ITA Conference Masters was WMU's doubles group of senior Brogan Pierce and freshman Jack Davison. The duo opened the tournament with a win in the Round of 32, defeating Drake's Benjamin Johnson and Christian Winstead 6-3, 6-4. In Friday's Round of 16, the pair fell to UNC Wilmington's Joseph Wayand and Alex Degabriele 6-2, 7-5.
