Women’s Basketball Falls to SMU on the Road

DALLAS, Tx. – The Western Michigan University women's basketball team dropped Tuesday's road contest at Southern Methodist University 72-44 Tuesday afternoon. In the loss, Artemis Kouki scored a career-best 15 points and knocked down a career-high five three-pointers to lead WMU.

To begin Tuesday's action, WMU raced off to a hot start scoring on back-to-back possessions to create a five-point lead over the Mustangs. After SMU tied the game up at five all with eight minutes remaining in the first, Evyn  Carrier scored a layup to put the Broncos back in front with 7:37 to go in the quarter. Despite WMU's electric start, the Brown and Gold were limited to two points over the final seven and a half minutes of the first quarter. At the conclusion of the quarter, WMU trailed SMU 17-9.

Within the first four minutes of the second quarter, Kouki caught fire and made two three-pointers to bring the Broncos back within five points. After a free throw by D'Ahnaa Richardson and a three-pointer by Carrier, WMU had cut the SMU lead to four with 4:57 remaining in the half. Despite WMU's comeback effort, SMU used a 12-0 run to conclude the first half to create distance from the Broncos. At the break, WMU faced a 36-20 deficit.

During the thrid, Hannah Spitzley and Marina Asensio combined for WMU's five points. At the conclusion of the quarter, SMU led 55-25.

In the fourth quarter, The Brown and Gold scored a team-best 19 points behind a scorching 63.64% from the field. With 1:33 remaining, Kouki splashed her fifth and final three-pointer of the game and completed the contest shooting an efficient five for nine from distance.

Tip-Ins

Freshman Sarah Rekowski grabbed a career-high and game-high nine rebounds in 22 minutes of work.

Historical Notes

Kouki's five three-pointers made this afternoon are tied for the fifth most threes sunk by a Bronco in single-game program history.

Spitzley's two swipes improved her career total to 131 steals and counting. The graduate student guard needs six more steals to pass Michelle Fortier (1990-93) for 18th on the program's all-time steals list.
