Women’s Basketball Falls to In-State Rival Michigan State

KALAMAZOO, Mich. – The Western Michigan women's basketball team lost to its in-state rival Michigan State University Sunday evening 79-42. In the loss, graduate student guard Hannah Spitzley swiped two steals and scored a team-high 15 points after shooting 62.5% from the field. 

In the opening 10 minutes of play, MSU limited the Broncos to eight points. Spitzley paced the Broncos with a team-best five points in the quarter. At the conclusion of the first, the Green and White led 23-8. 

The women's basketball team shot a team-best 38.46% in the second quarter, en route to making five field goals. In the frame, Sptizley, Artemis Kouki, and Marina Asensio drilled one three-pointer each to lead WMU offensively. At the half, MSU led 46-21.

The Brown and Gold continued their competitive fight exiting halftime and limited MSU to 13 points offensively in the third while scoring 12 as a team. In the quarter, the Broncos displayed a balanced attack with Asensio, Bolds, Carrier, and Sptizley, all scoring for the Brown and Gold.  

Freshman Sarah Rekowski, redshirt junior De'Ahna Richardson, and Spitzley combined for WMU's nine points in the fourth quarter. 

Tip-Ins 

Asensio's game-high four steals marked a career-high for the junior guard from Sabadell, Spain. 

Tonight marked the 28th time in Spitzley's career that she would knock down at least two three-pointers in a contest. 

Historical Notes 

After her two swipes this evening, Spitzley improved her career total to 133 steals. The graduate student is four swipes away from passing Michelle Fortier (1990-93) at 17th on WMU's all-time steals list.

At the conclusion of tonight's contest, Spitzley now has 89 career three-pointers and is four treys from passing Leighah-Amori Wool (2017-2020) at 18th on WMU's all-time three-point made list
